The RAID 0 products are very inexpensive and robust, but also very insecure.
Two companies sell one type of solution to add several disks to an Apple G5 computer. These products consist of a way to mount more than two 3.5” disks inside the G5. They also use a Serial ATA PCI controller supplied by FirmTek
Wiebetech and Transintl are the two companies that sell the products with or without disk drives.
There is more information about the use of these products and the speed that are expected using the G5 computer at barefeats. web site.
The next level of RAID systems are the SCSI connected RAID arrays available from several different vendors. We will not be able to list all of those available but will provide links to those most commonly used by Final Cut Pro editors. HugeSystems and Medea provide SCSI RAID systems.
Finally, the fastest disk system on earth is Fibre Channel. A fine example of a reasonably priced FC disk system is the Apple Xserve RAID.
Fibre Channel is the fastest disk array because it uses a Fibre (light pipe) to transport data between the disk and the computer instead of copper. The actual transfer speeds are now up to 2 Ghz but the disks are much slower. Many FC Arrays were traditionally priced at or above $30K until some one (including Apple) found a way to couple Serial ATA drives to the FiberChannel interface.
Another vendor of FC Arrays is FireWireDirect.
